On May 15, as part of the first SYVE QA Summit held in Sarajevo, BiH,  Armin Zebić and Nedim Korjenić led a workshop titled "Performance That Pays Off: Turning Speed Into Strategic Value." The session was held in a dynamic and interactive setting, focusing on the idea that performance testing is not just about speed—it is about strategic impact.

Performance That Pays Off: Turning Speed Into Strategic Value

Performance as a Business Asset

Performance testing goes far beyond checking technical specifications. It is about ensuring that systems perform reliably under pressure—something critical for both user experience and brand reputation.

They pointed out that performance issues can have significant financial and reputational consequences, referencing well-known outages at companies like Amazon and Facebook as examples of how downtime can lead to major losses.

When and Why Performance Testing Matters

The workshop outlined when performance testing should be applied during the software lifecycle:

  • During development – to catch performance issues early
  • Before deployment – to ensure systems can handle real-world loads
  • After updates – to verify that new features haven’t introduced regressions
This proactive approach helps businesses avoid last-minute surprises and costly fixes.

A Structured Approach to Testing

A step-by-step process for effective performance testing:

  1. Planning – Define scope, goals, and key scenarios
  2. Test Environment Setup – Simulate production-like conditions
  3. Execution – Run various load and stress tests
  4. Monitoring & Analysis – Identify bottlenecks using real data
  5. Optimization – Implement fixes and improvements
  6. Iteration – Re-test and validate changes

Real Examples, Real Tools

Throughout the session, they shared practical experiences from their own projects, including:

  • Database-related slowdowns (e.g., Hibernate issues)
  • The need to adjust the test distribution to better reflect user behavior

They also introduced tools like Apache JMeter, LoadRunner, and AppDynamics as essential parts of the performance testing toolkit.

Key Takeaway

Performance testing is not an optional task—it’s a strategic investment. It enables companies to:

  • Build trust through reliability
  • Enhance customer experience
  • Make confident, data-driven decisions

If you want to scale, if you want to retain users, if you want to sleep well during product launches, performance testing is your safety net.

The best time to start was yesterday. The second-best time is now.
Performance testing is about protecting your software, your business, and your users.
