Building a better future for the children in Uganda

Since September 2021, System Verification Germany has started their partnership with @Zukunft für Bweyas Kinder e.V. (ZBK) to support @children Safe Uganda (CSU). The goal of ZBK is to ensure the basic needs of all children living in Bweya,  as well as to provide access to education, thus guaranteeing a sustainable future. This is exactly where System Verification steps in and we are aiming to provide support in the long run with the vision of making CSU economically more independent and building a better future for the children in Uganda. In this blog post, we are continuously sharing the latest updates from this collaboration and our charity project.

September 2023: Great progress on inside and outside

During the past months, the construction work on the kitchen building has made some tremendous progress. The frame for the ceiling was built successfully. Thus, the ceiling boards were able to be attached with steel nails to specifically avoid dropping and sagging. After the successful installation of the ceiling boards on the building’s roof, wall cornices have been installed on the inside in order to seal small gaps between walls and ceiling boards. Closing to the roof from both inside and outside is not only ensures better safety of the building but also immediately provides the opportunity to use the building again to everyone in the orphanage. Although the kitchen still needs to be installed and some more construction work needs to be done, the building is finally a safe place for everyone to gather.

Latest update:  March 2023: Building up roof and ceiling

After some months of pausing, the renovation works continued in December 2022. The focus was now to install the new roof and ceiling according to the previous renovation plans. After frames for the roof and ceiling structure have been built successfully, iron sheets have been installed. Slowly the kitchen building starts to take its new shape, but a lot of work is left to do.  The renovation work for the ceiling has to be continued and finished in the whole building and the re-construction of the roof height has to be completed. Additionally, the interior work is just as urgently needed as the construction of a new cooking facility. At some point in the future, new window panes will also have to be installed. While focusing on the ongoing construction work, CSU is continuously taking new children in who lost their homes. Since November 2022, eight new children between the ages of 2 to 13 years have joined the orphanage.

September 2022: Adjusting the kitchen walls

Since this huge renovation project started, the focus was set on adjusting the walls of the building. The starting period has been dominated by extending the walls to the roofing/wall plate level. As some walls haven’t been solid and strong anymore due to the heat and smoke of the cooking place, they had to be torn down.

July 2022: Kicking off the renovation of the kitchen main hall

For far too long, the kitchen building at the orphanage couldn't be used. The building itself is in a dilapidated condition, with cracks in the outer walls, missing stones in the masonry, and a leaking roof. For cooking, an open fireplace has to be used outside, causing harmful smoke emissions. This has to be changed! Therefore, System Verification Germany is contributing together with ZBK in the renovation of the main hall and kitchen building. Our goal is to provide the children and staff with a functional kitchen that is capable of catering to 100 children, provides shelter, and becomes a place of joy. Part of this renovation is the strengthening of the roof in order to install solar panels.

The renovation project started mid of June. We are hoping for fast and sustainable progress.

September 2021: The start of our collaboration

Since September 2021, System Verification Germany has started their partnership with Zukunft für Bweyas Kinder e.V. (ZBK) to support Children Safe Uganda (CSU).

The goal of ZBK is to ensure the basic needs of all children living in Bweya and provide access to education, thus guaranteeing a sustainable future by collecting donations. This is precisely where System Verification steps in. Together, we are working on different ideas to improve the children's education, nutrition, and future. We are not intending to only support one-time donations but rather to provide support in the long run, i.e. to also support bigger projects in Uganda that are related to education, renovating buildings/facilities, and ensuring the safety in the orphanage. Together, ZKB and CSU have great ideas on how to improve educating children and are planning to build up a training center with the vision of making CSU economically more independent.
